The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College promotes reading and writing by presenting high-quality activites open to all.



The Big Read

Month-long reading campaign to entice reluctant readers. Powered by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. In Spring 2015 we’ll be reading When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka.


Read to Learn

Books for Free

A literacy program that encourages children to read by making free books available in Miami-Dade County’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. Shelves are located in public health clinics, neighborhood assistance centers, public housing and elsewhere. More than 3,000 books are given away monthly. In partnership with The Children’s Trust.

Generation Genius StoryArts

A literacy project for children that bridges art-making and reading and takes place in afterschool programs. The Center distributes free books to participants.

























Teatro Prometeo:


Staged productions and dramatic readings performed year-round by Prometeo students.

Acting Classes

Continuing education courses on various aspects of the craft taught once a week over 12 weeks. Three sessions scheduled per year. (In Spanish.)


in Theatre Arts

A non-credit, intensive program that features a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum of study. The actor’s unique potential is cultivated and encouraged. Audition required for admittance.



















Play Time!

International Children's Theatre Festival

An annual event presenting the best local, national and international children’s theatre companies. Play Time! is made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.

Generation Genius Acts

Los Prometeítos, the youngest members of Teatro Prometeo, explore the world of dance, acting and singing, and participate in fun activities that develop creativity.


























Miami Book Fair International:

Festival of Authors

From newbies to Nobel prize winners, and in half a dozen languages, these readings and discussions are the heart of the Fair.

Street Fair

Three days, a million books, two hundred thousand readers, plus music and delicious food — a celebration unequaled.

Destination Comics

Miami Book Fair’s own comic con! Featuring creator panels, comics-making workshops, publishers and comic shops.



















Featured Country

Miami Book Fair honors its home city — one of the most international places in the world — by featuring one country each year and showcasing its literature and culture.

The Swamp

An interactive pop-up lounge featuring artists and writers from all over Florida. The Swamp will reflect the current cultural scene and showcase work that explores the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness and “weirdness” of life in Florida. The Swamp is made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.


Generation Genius Children's Alley

Stories come to life during Miami Book Fair's Street Fair with authors, storytellers and puppeteers, plus theatre, dance and more!

























Creative Writing Program

Continuing education creative writing courses and workshops scheduled during the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Miami Writers Institute

Twice-yearly creative writing conferences featuring workshops with bestselling and award-winning authors and publishing professionals.

Visiting Authors

Readings, lectures and signings open to the public, plus residencies and workshops in MDC classrooms and public schools.

















Generation Genius Writes

Creative writing workshops for children and teens in locations throughout Miami, as well as in their schools. Taught by local and visiting authors.
